This private, 16-hour course (8 sessions x 2 hours) is perfect for those who already have a strong foundation in art or have completed Fundamentals of Art: Level 1. Your instructor Swapnil will guide you through several topics, including object and still life drawing, understanding composition and perspective, nature and memory drawing, freehand drawing, and more.

Course Outline

  • Subject 1: Object Drawing/Still Life
    • Aims: To develop the ability to draw the shapes of objects neatly in pencil & color.
      • To gain a general understanding of tones.
      • To study forms and relative proportions.
      • To develop a general understanding of space organization.
      • To be able to handle watercolor and/or pastels and other mediums.
    • Syllabus: To draw and color a simple group of 4 to 5 objects placed in front of the students. The objects should be of good forms based on basic geometrical shapes and they should preferably be colored. (The objects may be arranged on the floor or above at some suitable height.) Students should be able to render tonal values in colors in a very simple manner. Mechanical devices are not to be used.
    • Suggested mediums: (1) Pencil, watercolors, poster colors, oil or wax crayons, colored pencils, etc.
  • Subject 2: Composition & Understanding Perspective
    • Why is Composition Important?
    • The Principles of Design in Artistic Composition
    • Elements of Composition
    • The Rule of Thirds / Creating Diagonals / Rule of odds
    • Geometry and symmetry
    • Rules Exist to Be Broken
    • Tips for Planning Composition & Simplification
  • Subject 3: Nature Drawing/Memory Drawing
    • Aims: To develop the ability to observe and render a simple natural form. To study natural forms and their growth and structure.
    • Syllabus: Drawing and coloring a plant with 3 to 5 leaves of medium size and a flower or two. Enlarging and drawing any one part of the plant such as joints, stems, knots, petals, leaves, tendrils, etc.
    • Suggested Mediums: (1) Pencil (2) Watercolors (transparent and /or opaque).
    • Aims: To develop the ability to retain and recall memory images. To develop the power of imaginative reconstruction and the ability to express an idea pictorially.
    • Syllabus: Simple familiar objects (animate or inanimate) to be drawn in pencil and colored. To illustrate a familiar incident from daily life. To create a picture based on several given animate or inanimate objects.
  • Subject 4: Design/Freehand Drawing
    • Aims: To develop creative expression. To understand the simple principles of design such as balance, proportion, and rhythm. To develop the ability to apply these principles creatively for specific purposes. To develop a sense and understanding of color harmony and its effect.
    • Syllabus: Any type of decorative design-floral, geometrical or abstract, to be executed in color, with a definite purpose. Any kind of motifs such as geometrical shapes, birds, animals, fishes or any abstract forms may be composed to form a design. The design may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
    • Suggested mediums:(1) Pencil (2) Watercolor (transparent &/or opaque).
    • Suggested techniques:(1) Rags, fingers, crumpled paper, thread, brush, leaves or other similar materials may be used for stamping and printing to bring in textural quality. (2) Tracing methods can also be used.
  • Subject 5: Freehand Drawing
    • To train the hand and the eye to develop a sense of balance, proportion, and rhythm, without the use of geometrical or mechanical devices. To develop the ability to reproduce neatly and proportionately with a given form or diagram.

    • Syllabus: Any traditional decorative design or a similarly prepared simple one will be supplied to the students for drawing in an enlarged size. It need not necessarily be symmetrical.

    • Suggested mediums: Pencil, opaque black color, or waterproof black ink.
